5 Signs Your Car Needs Paint Correction

Published 20 Feb 2026 · Updated 1 Nov 2026 · Klar Details team

Paint correction is worth considering when your paint shows swirl marks, oxidation, etched water spots, a rough feel or lost gloss. These are defects in or on the clear coat, and a careful polish can level or remove most of them before you protect the finish.

1. Are there swirl marks in the sun?

Fine circular scratches show up under direct light, especially on dark paint. They come from washing and drying with dirty or rough media. They do not wash away, but polishing can remove them.

Check in the sun or under a bright torch. Defects hide in shade and in dull garage lighting.

2. Does the paint look faded or chalky?

Oxidation shows as a dull, hazy or chalky surface, common on cars parked in strong sun. It sits in the top layer of paint and often responds well to polishing, as long as the clear coat is intact.

Oxidised paint is dry rather than dirty, so a wash will not bring the colour back.

3. Are there water spot marks that will not wash off?

Mineral deposits that have etched into the clear coat remain after washing. Light etching can be polished out. Read our guide to removing water spots from car paint for the safe steps.

Test a small, hidden area first. If a gentle polish clears the mark, correction will almost certainly help the rest of the panel.

4. Does the surface feel rough?

Run your hand, in a clean plastic bag, over the paint. A gritty feel means bonded contamination that washing alone does not lift. Decontamination, followed by polishing if needed, restores smoothness.

5. Has the gloss gone?

When reflections look soft instead of sharp, the surface is probably covered in micro-defects. Correction brings clarity back.

What happens next matters too. After correction we usually recommend protection. See our paint correction service at Klar Details, then pair it with a coating to keep the result.

What does the correction process involve?

  1. Wash and decontaminate the paint.
  2. Inspect and test a small area to choose the right method.
  3. Machine polish panel by panel.
  4. Wipe down and check the result under strong light.
  5. Apply a coating or sealant to protect the finish.

The aim is to remove the defect, not to take more clear coat than needed.

Questions

Can paint correction remove all scratches?

No. It removes defects within the clear coat. Deeper scratches that reach the colour coat or primer may be reduced but not fully removed. We tell you plainly what is realistic during the free assessment, so you know what to expect before you decide.

Is paint correction the same as polishing?

Correction is a deliberate, staged polishing process aimed at removing specific defects, rather than a quick shine-up. It begins with inspection and testing, uses machine polishing matched to the paint, and ends with protection so the improved finish lasts. If you are unsure, ask us during the free assessment and we will explain the options clearly.

Do I need a coating after correction?

We recommend it. Without protection, freshly corrected paint can pick up swirls and water spots again quickly. A ceramic or graphene coating keeps the surface slick and easier to wash, which is how the result stays sharp for longer. If you are unsure, ask us during the free assessment and we will explain the options clearly.

How do I avoid swirl marks afterwards?

Wash with clean mitts, use the two-bucket method and dry gently with a soft, clean towel. Avoid automatic brush washes and never wipe dry dust off the paint. These habits do more to preserve a corrected finish than any product. If you are unsure, ask us during the free assessment and we will explain the options clearly.
