Tap water in Singapore carries dissolved minerals at roughly 80 to 120 ppm TDS. When it dries on paint, those minerals stay behind as spots. Pure water at about 0 ppm leaves nothing to dry, so a coated car finishes clean, spot-free and gently treated.

What is TDS and why does it matter?
TDS means total dissolved solids: the minerals and salts carried in water. Singapore tap water measures roughly 80 to 120 ppm. Our deionised final-rinse water measures about 0 ppm.
When a droplet evaporates, the water leaves but the minerals do not. That residue is what you see as a white spot.
Hard water spots are a cosmetic issue at first. Left alone, they can bond to the surface and need polishing to remove, which is why prevention is the better route.
What are the benefits of a pure water rinse?
- Spot-free drying. With nothing dissolved, nothing is left behind, even in warm bays.
- Safe for coatings. Mineral deposits can sit on a coating and dull its slickness. Pure water avoids that.
- Gentle on paint. Less aggressive drying and wiping means fewer micro-marks.
- More considerate use of resources. A cleaner rinse reduces the need for repeat passes.
On a coated car, these benefits compound. The coating is designed to shed water and dirt, and a mineral-free rinse lets it do exactly that.
The same logic applies to glass and trim, where mineral spots are especially visible and tiresome to remove later.
How does this fit into KlarMAINTENANCE?
The pure water rinse is part of how we look after coated cars. Our half-yearly coating maintenance at Klar Details includes a careful wash, a pure water final rinse and a KlarSHIELD top layer at each visit, which helps the coating keep its water behaviour.
Can I do this at home?
You can reduce spotting at home, though not match a deionised system. Wash in shade, rinse thoroughly and dry the panels straight away with a clean microfibre towel. Avoid letting tap water air-dry in the sun.
For stubborn marks, our guide on removing water spots from car paint covers safe methods.
What does the full wash process look like?
- Pre-rinse to loosen surface dirt.
- Gentle hand wash with clean media.
- Decontamination where needed.
- Final rinse with pure water at about 0 ppm TDS.
- Careful drying and inspection.
Each step is simple on its own, but the order and the quality of the water make the difference between a clean car and a spotless one.
Questions
What does 0 ppm TDS mean?
It means almost no dissolved minerals remain in the water. Because evaporating water cannot leave deposits behind, panels dry without spots. Normal Singapore tap water is around 80 to 120 ppm TDS, which is why it marks paint and glass as it dries in warm conditions.
Does a pure water rinse replace drying?
It greatly reduces the need for aggressive drying, but we still finish panels carefully with soft towels. Pure water gives a clean margin of safety rather than a reason to skip proper technique, and it is one part of a complete wash process.
Is pure water only for coated cars?
Any paint benefits from a spot-free rinse. It matters most on coated cars because it keeps the coating surface clean and slick, which is how the layer performs best. Uncoated paint also stays cleaner for longer when mineral residue is avoided.
How often should a coated car be maintained?
We suggest half-yearly KlarMAINTENANCE visits, with a KlarSHIELD top layer applied each time. Between visits, wash gently, rinse off bird droppings promptly and avoid leaving water to dry on the paint in direct sun. If you are unsure, ask us during the free assessment and we will explain the options clearly.
