How to Wash a Ceramic-Coated Car: A Practical Maintenance Guide

Published 14 Oct 2026 · Updated 1 Nov 2026 · Klar Details team

Wash a ceramic-coated car by hand, in shade, with a pH-balanced shampoo and clean microfibre, then dry it straight away. A ceramic coating is not a self-cleaning force field. It makes dirt easier to remove, but it still needs gentle, regular washing to keep working.

Does a ceramic coating mean you can stop washing?

No. A coating makes paint slicker and more resistant, so dirt lets go more easily. It does not repel everything.

Road film, pollution and mineral deposits still build up. A dirty coating loses its water beading and looks dull, even though the paint underneath is fine. Regular washing is what keeps the effect visible.

What is the correct way to wash it?

  1. Park in shade and let the panels cool.
  2. Rinse the car thoroughly to remove loose grit.
  3. Wash with a pH-balanced car shampoo, using a clean wash mitt. Work from the roof downwards.
  4. Rinse the mitt often, and use a second bucket for rinsing if you can.
  5. Clean wheels last, with separate tools.
  6. Rinse the whole car thoroughly, ideally with low-mineral water.
  7. Dry with a soft microfibre drying towel or a blower.
  8. Check mirrors, door shuts and badges for hidden water.

The aim is contact that is light and clean. Grit dragged across paint causes swirl marks, with or without a coating.

What should you avoid?

  • Automatic brush washes, which can scratch paint and wear the coating.
  • Strong degreasers, acid wheel cleaners on paint, and harsh household products.
  • Washing in direct sun, which dries soap and minerals onto the surface.
  • Dirty towels and mitts.
  • Heavy rubbing on bug or bird residue. Soften it first.

Be careful with waxes and random sealants layered on top. They can mask the coating's behaviour. Use products compatible with your coating.

How often should you wash a coated car?

A regular wash every one to two weeks suits most Singapore daily drivers, with more frequent rinses after heavy rain, a dusty trip or a bird dropping. There is no single fixed rule. Let how dirty the car looks and how the water behaves guide you.

If water stops beading and starts sheeting or clinging, the surface is either dirty or the top layer is wearing thin.

When is professional maintenance worth it?

KlarCOAT is expected to last about 1 to 2 years with minimal upkeep, and KlarGRAPHENE up to 3 to 5 years with proper maintenance. Both depend on aftercare. Our coating maintenance programme is half-yearly. Each visit includes a careful wash, a pure-water final rinse and a fresh KlarSHIELD top layer.

Hard water is a common reason coatings look spotty, which is why the final rinse matters. See our guide on removing and preventing water spots for more.

Questions

Can I use a pressure washer on a coated car?

Yes, with care. Keep a sensible distance, avoid panel edges and any damaged or chipped paint, and never aim the jet directly at them. A pressure washer is useful for the pre-rinse, but it is not a substitute for a gentle, careful contact wash with a clean mitt.

Can I take a ceramic-coated car through an automatic wash?

It is best avoided. Brushes can scratch the paint and wear the coating, and recycled water or harsh chemicals can leave residue behind. A hand wash with clean tools and a pH-balanced shampoo is much safer and keeps the coating working the way it is meant to.

Do I need special shampoo?

A quality pH-balanced car shampoo is enough for routine washing. Some coating-specific shampoos add a light top-up of protection, but they are optional. Avoid dish soap and strong detergents, which can strip protection and dry out rubber and trim over time.

Why is my coated car not beading water any more?

Usually the surface is dirty or the top layer has worn. A proper wash often restores the beading. If it does not, the coating may simply need refreshing, and a maintenance visit with a new top layer is the right next step. We can check it for you.

How soon can I wash after coating?

Follow the instructions given to you at handover, because the coating needs time to cure fully. In general, keep early washes gentle, use only a pH-balanced shampoo and avoid harsh products or automatic washes until we advise otherwise. Ask us if you are unsure.
